Stage4 Breast Cancer Treatments

The cancer does not remain within the breast and has spread far beyond the breast and nearby lymph nodes in stage 4 of the breast cancer. Liver, bones, lungs, or even brain can get affected. Focused treatments such as radiation or surgery alone are not enough because of the fact that multiple areas may be involved. A cure is not provided by the treatment of stage 4 breast cancer so far. You can live longer, feel better, and can get the disease slowed down through the procedure of shrinking the cancer. Although, it is typically fatal at some point, stage 4 breast cancer patients may live for years influenced by many factors.

Following are some of the standard stage 4 breast cancer treatments:

Surgery and Radiation:

Radiation and surgery are recommended in some cases. Curing the cancer is not the purpose these treatments are used for. The areas where the cancer has spread may get pain alleviation and symptoms relieve though.

Chemotherapy:

Treatment with drugs is known as chemotherapy. For stage 4 breast cancer patients, chemotherapy is frequently used in combination with immunotherapy or hormone therapy.

Biological Therapy:

It is a new approach toward stage 2 breast cancer treatment as it was just recently that studies led to its use in early breast cancer. HER2, which is a protein, gets increased and makes the cancer spread quickly in an estimated 25% of women with breast cancer. An approved new drug for women with metastatic breast cancer is Herceptin that is HER2-positive. It makes chemotherapy more effective by stopping this protein from making the cancer grow. It is often combined with chemotherapy.

Other Drugs:

Some of the side effects of the breast cancer treatment such as infections, fatigue, and nausea may be treated with the other drugs.

Hormone Therapy:

Breast cancer patients who have hormone receptor-positive cancer sometimes require to be administered hormone therapy. The tumor can be prevented from getting the needed hormone to grow through the use of medicines (such as tamoxifen and newer aromatase inhibitors like Arimidex) in these women. To stop the ovaries from making hormones that help cancer grown, removing the ovaries may be considered.
