A painless lump is often the first of breast cancer. However, it should be noted that the painless lump is often found with the help of a mammogram as in its early stage it can not be felt by bare hands.
Until the breast cancer is more advanced, other signs and symptoms of breast cancer may not appear. The signs and symptoms of somewhat advanced level of breast cancer include:
A changed feel or color of the skin around areola (area around the nipple)
A change in the shape or size of the breast
Changes in the nipple e.g. discharge or bleeding, scaling of the skin, or a nipple that turns in
A thickened armpit or breast
Changes in the skin of the breast like skin or a dimple that looks like orange peel
About one percent of breast cancer occurs in men. Over 65 men are the most common victims of breast cancer with the possibility of younger men developing it. Because of that, a breast lump found in an adult male is not considered normal.
Inflammatory breast cancer, a particular type of breast cancer that involves the skin of the breast, occurs when breast cancer cells block the lymphatic drainage from the skin of the breast by forming “nests.” The signs and symptoms of inflammatory breast cancer are:
- Possibility of ridging of the skin of the breast
- Thickening of the breast skin i.e. an orange peel appearance
